The Contents of the Case Henry Unlocks in Stranger Things?
Throughout a large portion of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped inside a mental fortress constructed from the recollections of the villain Henry. Their quest for a way out in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to relive a defining event from Henry's childhood—an event that potentially carries the secret to his downfall permanently.

The Discovery in the Cavern
After locating Max in the mental landscape dubbed Camazotz, Max reveals she is hiding out in a cave that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. By aligning her view with the shape, she and Max tumble into a abandoned tunnel.
They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an wounded, fearful individual. When Henry tries to help, the man panics and shoots, hitting him in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the trauma involved more than a fight for life.
Like many elements of the final season, the truth about the mine shaft incident is detailed in the theatrical production The First Shadow.
The Philadelphia Experiment and A Spy's Mission
The play reveals the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a warship into a plane known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who came back in a vegetative state with an entirely new blood.
The captain's son, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this experiment in the Nevada desert. One of his scientists stole research materials to give to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the cavern is the one who stole the materials.
The Briefcase's Contents
Based on what is known about the doctor's experiments, the briefcase would assuredly have some of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, causing the awakening of his powers—traits he would genetically impart to the children in Hawkins Lab.
Another possibility, the container could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it helps stabilize the parallel world. The prequel shows that Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, reappearing hours later with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he fights the control of a dark entity, similar to how Will Byers was possessed by the shadow monster in the past.
Confronting Terror
The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine shows how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. While he commands the army of monsters and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him lingers. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has overcome his personal demons to become stronger.
His confrontation has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, potentially giving him a critical advantage in the ultimate battle ahead.
