The Actress Says Speaking About Donald Trump Would ‘Intensify Divisions’ Tearing the Country Apart
Jennifer Lawrence has declared that she believes it's no longer appropriate to voice opinions regarding the Trump government, concerned it could intensify divisive discussions and increase separation across the country.
‘I Question the Usefulness’, Says Lawrence
Speaking with media, she reflected, “When Trump was first in office, I believed I was moving hastily without clear direction. But experience has shown, over multiple voting cycles, public figures fail to influence in any way on voter decisions.”
The actor went on, “Why continue? I’m just sharing my opinion on an issue that’s going to worsen tensions dividing the nation apart.”
Political Evolution
The actress has spoken candidly about backing conservative and liberal presidential nominees over the years. Brought up by conservative Republicans in Kentucky, she supported the Republican nominee in the 2008 election then moving to the Democratic party and explaining she understood during Obama’s administration that voting Republican was opposing her personal freedoms as a woman.
Previous Comments
Several years ago, she remarked that Trump winning the presidency could represent “a disaster” and endorsed the Democratic candidate in the 2020 election. More recently, she lent her support to Vice President Harris, “since I think she’s a strong contender and I trust that she will do whatever she can to protect reproductive rights.”
Industry Position
Lawrence was aligned with most of Hollywood in her opposition to Donald Trump as a candidate for re-election, but the lack of leverage celebrities have over the electoral decisions was underscored by Trump’s victory.
“This upcoming term feels different,” said Lawrence of his leadership. “Because he made his plans clear. We knew what he did for four years. He was explicit. And that’s the option selected.”
Latest Film
The actor is currently promoting her new film, director Lynne Ramsay’s project in which she stars as a new mother who struggles with her psychological well-being in the countryside. At a press conference for the movie in the film festival, the star commented on Israel’s bombings in Gaza: “I feel fear. It’s devastating. What’s taking place is nothing short of a humanitarian crisis and it’s awful.”
Additional Thoughts
The actress elaborated by stating that she was disheartened by “the hostility in the discourse of U.S. political debates right now and how that is going to be normalised to the children now. It’s going to be typical to them that leaders are untruthful.”
Lawrence aimed to shift anger about the issue to leaders rather than actors and artists. “Keep attention on those accountable,” she advised, seen by observers as a reference to the declaration supported by more than 4,000 Hollywood professionals to boycott specific industry bodies.
Relatable Experiences
Lawrence, who received an Academy Award aged 22 for her role in the acclaimed film, is attracting awards attention for her performance in Die, My Love. While Ramsay has rejected the narrative being understood as one of post-birth struggles and psychological distress, the actress revealed that she identified with parts of her character’s journey after the delivery of her second son, soon after shooting ended.
“It was fear regarding my baby,” she commented, “imagining every potential danger, and then questioning everything that I was doing. I was already in therapy, but I got on a treatment called that medicine and I used it for 14 days and it was effective.”
Career Moments
Jennifer Lawrence also discussed of the empowering aspect of completing nude scenes in the movie while she was some months pregnant and limited physically.
“There’s a freedom,” she commented, regarding the need to cast off vanity. “Truly, I do have moments where I’m like, What separates me between my work and that profession? But it doesn’t trouble me deeply.”
