Larry Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board

One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is departing from the board at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a collection of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became public.

He commented in a release that he was "thankful for the chance to have participated, optimistic about the promise of the organization, and anticipate observing their progress".

Summers, who formerly presided over Harvard University, declared on Monday that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.

Digital Correspondence

The freshly disclosed messages showed that Summers exchanged messages with the financier until the eve of the financier's 2019 arrest for alleged trafficking of young people.

In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company expressed it accepted his determination to depart.

"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the viewpoint he brought to the governing body," the organization commented.

Legislative Background

This development arrives after the entire Congress of the US legislature decided on Tuesday to approve a legislation that would require the federal prosecutors to disclose its files on Jeffrey Epstein.

The measure will afterward head to the desk of President Trump for endorsement. Trump has said he expects to endorse the bill, after changing his position on the subject following pushback from his followers.

Correspondence Findings

A collection of financier-linked messages released by the House Oversight Committee last week included several well-known personalities in the Epstein's past associates, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those individuals.

The emails revealed that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often seeking to introduce the official to prominent international personalities.

Individual Statement

After the messages were made available with the public, the former official expressed he accepted "full responsibility for my poor decision to maintain corresponding with Mr Epstein".

He further stated that he desired "to reestablish faith and repair bonds with the individuals most important to me".

Previous Positions

The professor occupied leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; functioning as economic leader under President Clinton, and as head of the economic advisory body under Barack Obama.

He presided over the university from the early 2000s and continues to be a faculty member there. When announcing his withdrawal from public roles previously on this week, he indicated he would maintain his teaching commitments.

Additional Consequences

Following Summers' declaration on Monday, the Washington think tank, a progressive think tank in Washington where Summers was a researcher, confirmed that the economist was not associated with the institution.

He joined the board of OpenAI, which creates the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a defeated move to remove its top executive Sam Altman.
