Three members of law enforcement perished and no fewer than 15 others sustained injuries in an apparently deliberate blast caused by gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

Event Timeline

The detonation occurred as officers and emergency crews approached the residence near Verona to carry out an court-ordered eviction for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three officers killed belonged to the Italian military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

One male and one female got detained at the scene and one more individual who escaped following the blast was found soon after. The trio have been transported to the hospital.

The explosion could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the location displayed the structure turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who added that previous tries had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the past.

Property Situation

The president of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, stated the property was facing an removal notice due to debts incurred by the property owners.

Negotiators had been dispatched to talk with the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the police reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect a family member set off the blast.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander Commander Papagno told reporters.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the explosion precisely impacted our members,” he explained.

Molotov cocktails were also found at the residence, the interior minister confirmed.

Injuries and Destruction

Injured individuals by the incident comprised eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as three members of the state police and a fire services member.

According to the local prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had no electricity.

The prosecutor thought the blast had happened on a story above the entrance and told reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the blast, he mentioned officers had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas canisters being opened”.

Community Reaction

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents told Italian media, mentioning that the three had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three men who had died in the line of duty.
